The hearing on screentime in schools featured discussions on the safety and educational value of technology, as well as the urgent need for more rigorous research. In her written testimony, Kris Perry, Executive Director of Children and Screens, highlighted the need for additional research on the impact of digital technology on education to address the most pressing questions surrounding the benefits and pitfalls of technology’s use in education.

Kris Perry’s testimony included policy recommendations on behalf of the Institute. These suggestions included:

    • Investing in and supporting public interest research to study the effects of technology and digital media
    • Studying the impacts of school smart device bans
    • Refraining from requiring or encouraging integrating technology in schools until it has been thoroughly studied for its pedagogical or educational value
    • Increasing enforcement of existing regulations
    • Compelling companies to divulge the information necessary to enforce regulations and inform consumers
