Cam Adair (Founder, Game Quitters, Director, Intenta, Keynote Speaker, CAMPUSPEAK, Inc.) discusses the increased prevalence of youth video gaming and advocates for a curious rather than judgmental parenting approach to young gamers in the family at #AskTheExperts webinar “Win or Lose: What to Do about Videogaming” on September 23, 2020.

[Cam Adair] As we go forward over the course of the next decade, almost all kids growing up are going to be gamers. Gaming has become a huge source of the culture and we’re also seeing a lot of integration between popular culture including entertainment, products, and gaming, and COVID-19 has obviously had a huge impact on that. And as parents, it’s very important that you take a more curious stance towards video games now instead of judging them, stigmatizing them, thinking that those aren’t your real friends, thinking that gaming isn’t a meaningful experience in a young person’s life because it is and if anything it might be the most meaningful experience for many young people’s lives these days. So really being curious about games and not attacking it but also making sure that you’re putting practical tips in to ensure that gaming doesn’t become a problem or you reduce it if it has become a problem is really important.
