The safety and well-being of children should never be a partisan issue. The recently released language for the House KIDS Act, which establishes minimum protections for kids online while allowing for even stronger state laws, is the result of bipartisan negotiations, acknowledging that when it comes to our kids, politics should never be a roadblock to their safety.
The new bill package includes updates to the Kids Online Safety Act and Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act, improving upon previous House versions and giving states more freedom to enact even stronger protections. As negotiations continue, we ask the House to maintain this upward trajectory towards the strongest and most equitable policies possible. By putting evidence and research above partisan politics, Congress can help form an internet that is safe for young people, supporting them now and well into adulthood.
I am grateful for the hard work of everyone invested in this issue, including the many Senate and House champions who have never given up on strong digital governance. Above all, I am grateful to the advocates and grassroots voices who never let our leaders lose sight of what’s important: a safe and healthy childhood for all, offline and online.
