In The Streets Don’t End at the Corner: Gakirah Barnes, Digital Violence, and the Search for Humanity, author and Children and Screens’ Advisory Board and Evidence Council member Desmond Upton Patton, PhD, MSW, examines social media as an extension of neighborhoods and a space where young people experience grief, conflict, friendship, identity, and community. It also examines how technology and AI can misunderstand the very people they’re supposed to help, particularly Black youth and communities already facing systemic challenges. Dr. Patton advocates for imagining a world where technology is guided by care, context, and compassion.
